Changing inspections and leadership skills: Leading the way | Leadership Skills Foundation

Leading the way: Transforming inspection outcomes through student leadership programmes

If you’ve been following recent education news, you will know that changes are afoot in the world of school inspections.

Right at the beginning of the academic year, the Department for Education announced the removal of single word judgements from school inspections, paving the way for a huge change in the way schools were to be assessed and measured. -i.e. the report card inspections.

It’s fair to say that responses to the report cards have been…mixed, with some teachers concerned that they could be more complicated than the previous system or less transparent for parents.

However, Ofsted remain confident that their proposed new system will be fairer for schools and will provide a better overall picture of education standards across an increasingly complex landscape.

Embedding student leadership programmes to align with Ofsted criteria

for schools to demonstrate their plans and effectiveness for developing their students’ personal development, character and leadership.

The key aspect we are particularly interested in, given our work in developing leadership skills, is the element around students’ personal development. In this respect,  inspections are increasingly emphasising the importance of schools demonstrating clear, effective plans for fostering students’ personal development, character and leadership.

Introducing one of our leadership skill development programmes, such as Sports Leadership, is a powerful, practical way of meeting these expectations will also enriching school culture. Results from our recent impact report showed 88% of learners believe more in themselves and their ability to lead others, proving the improvement is felt where it matters most, the learner.

Implementing a Leadership Skills Foundation qualification, such as Sports Leadership, can significantly contribute to meeting the criteria outlined in the proposed Ofsted School Inspection Framework to be implemented in November 2025.

Throughout the academic year, our team of development and quality assurance officers speak regularly with teaching and leadership staff in schools. We consistently hear uncertainty about the upcoming inspection changes, but we also sense positivity about the potential for leadership skill development to play an important role in addressing the new framework.

We regularly hear stories of learners more able to articulate their development when questioned by inspectors and of schools able to demonstrate improved attendance figures as a direct result of implementing our programmes and adding an extra element of enjoyment for their students within the curriculum.

Now more than ever, embedding leadership opportunities and developing essential life skills is a strategic choice for our schools.

Implementing a Leadership Skills Foundation qualification, such as Sports Leadership, can significantly contribute to meeting the criteria outlined in the proposed Ofsted School Inspection Framework to be implemented in November 2025. Here’s how our programmes align to the specific areas:

Leadership and governance

Strategic Leadership and Capacity to Improve: By choosing to run leadership skills qualifications, headteachers are making a deliberate strategic leadership decision that signals a vision to develop student’s leadership skills alongside traditional subjects. Integrating student leadership programmes signals a commitment not only to developing young leaders, but also to strengthening the school’s capacity for continuous improvement and innovative curriculum design.

Curriculum

Curriculum Design and Implementation: Incorporating student leadership into the curriculum offers a broad and balanced educational experience. It ensures that students engage in diverse learning activities, promoting both academic and personal growth.

Developing Teaching

Professional Development: Teachers facilitating our qualifications often receive specialised training as a centre manager, tutor and internal verifier, enhancing their understanding of these roles. This professional growth contributes to improved teaching quality and student outcomes across the curriculum.

Achievement

Developing Transferable Skills: A leadership qualification builds teamwork, resilience, communication and teamwork which improve classroom engagement and are transferable across academic subjects, potentially boosting overall performance in subjects like English (oracy skills), Science (problem-solving), and PSHE (personal development).

Behaviour and attitudes

Promoting Positive Behaviour: Engaging in leadership roles such as those within sport encourages students to exhibit responsibility, respect, and resilience. These experiences foster and reinforce positive behaviours and attitudes, contributing to a constructive school environment.

Attendance

Active Participation and Sense of Responsibility: Our qualifications involve students in practical leadership roles, such as coaching and organising activities, which can increase their enthusiasm for school. By taking on leadership duties, students develop a sense of ownership and accountability, motivating them to attend school regularly.

Personal Development and Well-being

Character Education: Student leadership qualifications emphasize personal development, including self-confidence, leadership, and well-being. This focus aligns with Ofsted’s criteria for nurturing well-rounded individuals prepared for future success.

Inclusion

Equal Opportunity: Providing all students, regardless of background or ability, with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills in an accessible and supportive environment. Our programmes foster a sense of belonging and confidence by empowering young people to take on leadership roles, engage diverse groups and promote positive social interactions within their school community.
