Leadership Skills Foundation Accredits British Fencing’s Leadership Through Fencing Award

The Leadership Skills Foundation is proud to accredit British Fencing’s new Leadership Through Fencing award, a programme designed to help young people develop essential leadership and employability skills through fencing.

This innovative award uses fencing as a platform to build confidence, communication and teamwork, supporting young people as they progress through education and into employment.

Building leadership skills through fencing

Leadership Through Fencing is aimed at young people aged 11–17 and is delivered in schools, clubs, Scout groups, activity providers and leisure centres. Through a range of practical activities, participants develop key leadership skills that can be applied both within sport and in everyday life.

The award focuses on five essential skills:

  • Communication
  • Confidence
  • Teamwork
  • Organisation
  • Problem solving

On completion, learners achieve a nationally recognised, Leadership Skills Foundation-accredited award, recognising their development as a Fencing Leader.

Supporting quality leadership opportunities in sport

By accrediting the Leadership Through Fencing award, the Leadership Skills Foundation continues to ensure that national governing bodies and young people across the UK can access high-quality, structured leadership development opportunities through sport.

Richard Norman, Chief Executive of the Leadership Skills Foundation, said:

Creating opportunities for young people to build confidence in their skills is critical for helping them thrive, both in sport and in life.

We are pleased to accredit British Fencing’s Leadership Through Fencing award, supporting young people to develop essential skills and take on leadership roles within their communities.

Chris Turner, Head of Coaching and Workforce at British Fencing, added:

This award is a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop key leadership skills while supporting the sport. Through practical activities, participants will build communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills that can benefit them both on and off the piste.

Creating pathways for future leaders

Leadership Through Fencing is not a technical coaching qualification. Instead, it focuses on developing leadership capability, using fencing as an engaging and accessible way to inspire young people and support their personal growth.

Through programmes like this, the Leadership Skills Foundation continues to champion the development of essential skills, helping young people realise their potential and become the leaders of tomorrow.
