Empowering Communities Through Leadership and Learning

Gwella, a Local Authority Trading Company in Flintshire, Wales, manages a wide range of community services – from leisure centres and libraries to heritage sites and children’s play areas. At the heart of their work is a clear purpose: improving lives through health and well-being.

For the past few years, Gwella has been delivering a range of Leadership Skills Foundation programmes, including Sports Leaders and Dance Leaders courses, as part of their commitment to helping people build skills, confidence, and connection through activity.

Reaching learners through alternative provision

Many of Gwella’s courses are delivered within alternative provision settings, supporting young people who may not engage in mainstream education.

According to Dan Font, School and Community Sports Coordinator, these programmes have offered a vital sense of structure and belonging:

There’s one person who really struggles with everything else but still comes to our programmeIt’s given them that opportunity – that safe place to come in and learn.

By focusing on inclusion and accessible learning, the sports and dance leadership courses have given young people a platform to lead, achieve, and grow in confidence — both in and beyond sport.

Building confidence, not just qualifications

For Gwella, success isn’t measured only by the number of learners who complete a course – it’s in the visible change that happens along the way.

Young people who may have felt isolated or disengaged begin to show up, participate, and lead. Staff gain confidence in running sessions and using new systems. Communities see the ripple effect as learners take their skills beyond the classroom.

In Dan’s words

If you’re looking for professional people and good courses, the Leadership Skills Foundation is the right place to go.

The difference it makes

Through their delivery of Leadership Skills Foundation programmes, Gwella has seen:

  • Improved engagement among young people in alternative provision.
  • Increased staff confidence in delivering structured learning.
  • More streamlined processes thanks to accessible digital tools.
  • Stronger community connections built through shared activity.

It’s a reminder that leadership learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms – it grows in leisure centres, community halls, and on sports fields, wherever people are given the opportunity to lead.

Dan described how Gwella’s experience delivering these programmes has been shaped by strong communication and practical support from the Leadership Skills Foundation:

For the first quality assurance review, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but the team just popped on a call straight away, walked me through everything, and it ran smoothly.

He highlighted the value of small but significant tools and moments of support — from bitesize videos and Q&A sessions to responsive emails and live chat.

These details may seem simple, but together they’ve helped Gwella’s delivery team feel confident, informed, and well-equipped to provide the best possible experience for their learners.

Looking ahead

Gwella continues to integrate Leadership Skills Foundation programmes into its community and wellbeing work, ensuring essential skill development is accessible to all.

Their story reflects the impact that consistent support, inclusive practice, and a focus on wellbeing can have – turning local programmes into life-changing opportunities for learners.
