Breaking down barriers

Many girls face major barriers when it comes to competitive sport. Deep-rooted stereotypes make participation feel inaccessible and something that can only be experienced by boys.

A lack of understanding of the practical and emotional barriers that exist for girls can limit confidence, choice and opportunities.

Changing
the narrative

The Your Time programme addresses this by engaging more girls in competitive sport and peer leadership.

Our peer-led, blended learning model breaks down the deep-rooted stereotypes and barriers that make participation feel inaccessible for girls.

With Your Time the girls are in charge. They choose the activities that inspire them, and how and when they want to take part.

This empowerment boosts confidence and teaches leadership skills that are transferrable beyond education and into employment.

Message from
Your Time Programme Manager

Competitive school sport continues to be predominantly influenced by boys and sporting stereotypes and the barriers to participation for girls remain significant.

In a concentrated and strategic effort to address this gender imbalance, the Leadership Skills Foundation introduced the Your Time programme with the aim of levelling the playing field.

Endorsed by the Department for Education, Your Time places a blended-learning, peer leadership model at the heart of increasing and improving competitive sport opportunities for girls.

Throughout the Your Time programme I have seen many of my peers and participants happy with what they are doing and getting more confident over time.

That makes me feel proud of them and proud of myself.

It's time for Your Time

Women’s sport has taken a giant leap forward as a generation of young girls have been inspired by the barnstorming success of women and girls like the Lionesses, and the Red Roses’ at the rugby World Cup final.

These leading female athletes have shown women and girls what is possible.

Young girls look up to their peers and take inspiration from "people like me”. Your Time is part of a growing nationwide movement inspiring young girls to take part in competitive sport.

Hundreds of schools have already benefitted from taking part with more than 46,000 hours of competitive sports participation accumulated in just a 30 month period.

As a result, more girls are now playing competitive sport on a regular basis since participating in peer-led Your Time events.

And momentum is building – with more than 600 schools expressing an interest in becoming a Your Time school, the appetite for the programme is high and growing.

Too many girls disengage from sports in their teenage years. Your Time has demonstrated it is a peer-led programme that can bridge the complex barriers and not only keep young girls actively engaged in competitive sports, but also teach them foundational skills, delivering a legacy that extends well beyond the scope of the award.
