Lowland Leadership

Lowland Leadership offers delegates the opportunity to build leadership skills they can use in the great outdoors and transfer to other areas of their lives. They are suitable for those who want to run Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver expeditions and offer a way of formally recognising those who volunteer in outdoor organisations.

It is well-evidenced that there are life-changing benefits to spending time outdoors and in nature. Research across the board points to the connection between being outdoors and improvements to both physical and mental health.

With Lowland Leadership, we have the opportunity to support delegates to develop essential leadership skills that will offer them the chance to bring these benefits to others.

Centres, including outdoor learning centres, colleges, forest schools use Lowland Leadership to upskill their teams, offer formal training and recognition to their volunteer workforce, and to train staff from across their organisation to be able to run Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver expeditions.

Although our origins are in sports leadership, we’ve had qualifications for the outdoor world for more than 25 years, with our popular BELA being followed in more recent years by Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in walk and expedition leadership.

We have three courses that qualify delegates to assist or lead walks and expeditions, and the full suite of specifications can be downloaded using the form at the foot of the page.

  • Level 2 Qualification in Assisting Lowland Expedition Leadership
  • Level 3 Qualification in Lowland Walk Leadership (revised for 2023)
  • Level 3 Qualification in Lowland Expedition Leadership (revised for 2023)

  • Full training for tutors delivering the programme. This is online and accessible at any time.
  • A full suite of tutor resources to support delivery, accessible through our online course management system, Centre Hub.
  • Downloadable, editable Delegate Evidence Records (DERs) that allow delgates to record, reflect on, and evidence their learning.
  • Additional delegate resources to supplement the learning acitivities.
  • Dedicated Quality Assurance (QA) and relationship manager contacts from the Leadership Skills Foundation who offer personalised 1-2-1 support throughout delivery.

All three of the Lowland Leadership qualifications include a mix of theory and practical experience, with delegates having to demonstrate that they can lead others in a walk or expedition in lowland terrain.

The qualifications are delivered in schools, colleges, outdoor centres, independent organisations and other outdoor settings. We provide all the training delivery staff need to manage our processes, we just require that Level 3 deliverers to hold a Summer Mountain Leader qualification or equivalent.

See below for pricing details and contact us to provide this opportunity for those you work and volunteer with today.
