Group of four adults in walking gear against a background of fields on an outdoor education expedition in Shropshire.

Although our origins are in sports leadership, we’ve had qualifications for the outdoor world for more than 25 years, with our popular BELA being followed in more recent years by Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in walk and expedition leadership. They are suitable for those who want to run Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver expeditions.

We have three courses that qualify delegates to assist or lead walks and expeditions:

  • Level 2 Qualification in Assisting Lowland Expedition Leadership
    Minimum age: 15 years
    Total hours: 59
    Credits: 6
  • Level 3 Qualification in Lowland Walk Leadership (revised for 2023)
Minimum age: 16 years (17 on certification)
    Total hours: 84
    Credits: 8
  • Level 3 Qualification in Lowland Expedition Leadership (revised for 2023)
Minimum age: 16 years (17 on certification)
    Total hours: 134
    Credits: 13

All our qualifications include a mix of theory and practical experience, with delegates having to demonstrate that they can lead others in a walk or expedition in lowland terrain.

Our courses are delivered in schools, colleges, outdoor centres, independent organisations and other outdoor settings. We provide all the training delivery staff need to manage our processes, we just require that Level 3 deliverers to hold a Summer Mountain Leader qualification or equivalent.

Further details on requirements for each of the qualifications can be found by downloading a specification, below.
